About me
Paul Briley emerged as the newest Executive Director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children in over 20 years and rose quickly in his leadership as an influential driver of the national network for All of Us or None. His ability to draw from the past and present through a prism of historical roots that stretch across time-from the African diaspora unto the first nation people and throughout the islands of Hawai’i- provide a powerful lens by which to interpret the annexation and criminalization of black and indigenous cultural identity. The nuanced experiences of his ancestry propelled him into a brave advocate, one that challenges outdated systems envisioning new futures for system impacted people outside the realities of mass incarceration.
Through his time at LSPC, he has been a powerful force for change-fighting to protect and expand the rights of currently and formerly incarcerated people across education, employment, housing and civic engagement. Paul co-led the People over Profits campaign in San Francisco, an ordinance change that required the City and its vendors to stop generating revenue from incarcerated people and their loved ones. San Francisco became the first city in the nation to make jail phone calls free and end the markup of commissary items in the county Jail. Paul also serves as the chair of the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Commission, which is critical to ensuring the safety and care of children who come into contact with the juvenile justice system. Unbound by the institutions of previous order, his approach focuses not just on survival, but on transformative change that produces solutions.
